Every Etsy Policy Change in 2025-2026 (So Far)

by Viktors Telle 9 min read

I tried to keep a running list of every Etsy policy change over the past year. The list got long. Then it got kind of absurd.

Between June 2025 and now, Etsy rewrote their Creativity Standards, got a new CEO, became the first store inside ChatGPT, launched a pile of AI tools most sellers don't know exist, changed how payments work, and killed the de minimis loophole that international sellers relied on.

And they announced almost none of it in a way that would actually reach sellers. No pop-ups in Shop Manager. No "hey, heads up" emails. Just quiet policy page edits and blog posts buried in the Seller Handbook.

So here's everything. One place. I've linked to the deeper guides where we've already covered individual topics.

They got a new CEO and nobody's sure what it means

Josh Silverman stepped down on December 31, 2025 after eight years running Etsy. Kruti Patel Goyal took over on January 1, 2026.

If you don't know her name, you might know her work. She ran Depop - Etsy's Gen Z fashion marketplace - where sales jumped nearly 40% year-over-year by Q3 2025 and it became the fastest-growing online apparel resale marketplace in the US. Before that she spent over a decade at Etsy in various leadership roles including Chief Product Officer. So she's not a random corporate hire. She actually knows the platform.

The company line is "human-centric technology" and "returning the core marketplace to growth." Which could mean anything. But sellers I've talked to are cautiously hopeful because she's been on the inside long enough to know what's broken.

Some context on why the change happened: active buyers dropped 5% to 86.6 million and active sellers fell 10.9% to 5.5 million in Q3 2025. Those numbers are why there's a new CEO. Silverman is staying on as Executive Chair through the end of 2026, so he's not gone entirely. But the day-to-day decisions are Goyal's now.

That Creativity Standards rewrite

This happened on June 10, 2025 and it's still causing problems nine months later.

Etsy removed seven words from their Creativity Standards. Items used to be allowed if they were "based on a seller's original design or using a templated design or pattern." They cut everything after "original design."

I wrote a full breakdown of the Creativity Standards changes including what counts as "original" and how AI art disclosure works. Go read that one if this is news to you.

But there were other changes in the same update that got way less attention.

Vintage digital scans are gone. Etsy removed the language that let sellers sell digital files of scanned vintage content - old photographs, books, patterns. If you had a shop selling vintage ephemera as digital downloads, that's now against policy. No announcement. Just gone from the policy text.

Nature items got restricted. You can't buy rocks, gemstones, or seashells from Amazon or a hardware store and just resell them on Etsy anymore. You have to use them to create something. Which seems like it should've been obvious, but apparently enough sellers were doing it that Etsy had to spell it out.

Services got clarified. Modification services - like resizing a ring or hemming a dress - are now explicitly allowed, which is nice. But personal therapy, tutoring, training, coaching, and similar services are banned. Also banned: listings created just for transferring money. I'm guessing that last one was a money laundering problem.

Your shop is now inside ChatGPT

This one is genuinely wild and I keep meeting sellers who have no idea it happened.

On September 29, 2025, OpenAI launched Instant Checkout inside ChatGPT. Etsy was the first commerce partner. Their stock jumped 16% that day.

Here's what it means in practice: a ChatGPT user in the US can say "find me a handmade ceramic mug for under $40" and ChatGPT pulls up Etsy listings, shows product photos, and lets the buyer purchase without ever leaving the chat. No clicking through to Etsy. No browsing. Ask, see, buy.

For this to work for your shop, you need to be enrolled in Offsite Ads. That's it - no separate integration or signup needed.

It's currently limited to US buyers, single-item purchases, and US sellers. But ChatGPT has hundreds of millions of weekly users. Even a small percentage of those discovering products through chat is a sales channel that didn't exist a year ago.

Free tools you probably don't know about

Etsy rolled out a bunch of seller tools in September 2025 and the communication was terrible. I've been talking to sellers in groups and most haven't heard of half of these.

Marketplace Insights is the big one. It's a free keyword research tool built into your Shop Manager. Go to Stats, then Marketplace Insights. You get 15 keyword searches per week and it shows you actual Etsy search volume from the last 30 days plus how many competing listings exist for that term. Etsy Plus subscribers get unlimited searches. This is real Etsy data, not estimates from a third-party tool. Here's Etsy's guide on how to use it.

AI Title Suggestions. Etsy will now suggest optimized titles for your listings and you can review and apply them in bulk through the Search Visibility dashboard. The guidance has shifted hard away from keyword stuffing toward natural, conversational titles. Basically how buyers actually search instead of strings of keywords separated by commas.

AI Writing Assistant helps draft responses to buyer messages. Not going to write your listings for you, but useful when you're drowning in messages after a sale spike and need a starting point.

Attribute Suggestions auto-fills missing product details for certain categories. Small thing, but missing attributes can hurt your search visibility and most sellers don't realize they've left fields blank.

Review Summaries surfaces recurring themes from your buyer reviews. Helpful for spotting patterns you might miss reading reviews one at a time.

How payments work now

Etsy updated their Payments Policy effective December 12, 2025.

Instant Transfers are available for US sellers. You can move your balance to your bank within 30 minutes, 24/7, including weekends and holidays. The fee is 1% of the amount with a minimum of $0.25 and a cap of $1.00. There's a $500 maximum per transfer and a limit of one instant transfer per day. Find it in your Payment Settings if you haven't seen it.

Global scope expanded. The collection agent provisions now apply worldwide instead of just certain countries. If Etsy is collecting payments on your behalf, the same terms apply regardless of where you're based.

Tax on fees. If you're in Texas or Washington state, Etsy now charges sales tax on their service fees. This is a state law requirement, not something Etsy decided to do. But it's in the updated policy language and it will show up on your bill.

Tariffs are still a moving target

I covered this in detail in our tariff guide for Etsy sellers, but the short version: the US killed the $800 de minimis exemption. Every package shipped to American buyers from outside the US now goes through customs with actual duties.

The transition period with flat-fee tariffs ended February 28, 2026. It's now percentage-based rates permanently. If you ship internationally to US buyers, go read that guide. The math on your pricing has probably changed.

Things that are easy to miss

Policy Violations page. This is in your Shop Manager now and it shows all your removed listings with the specific policies they violated. Didn't exist before - you used to get a vague email and that was it. Check it regularly. If you have active violations, they're dragging down your entire shop's search ranking, not just the flagged listings.

Listing appeals. You can appeal Creativity Standards removals through Shop Manager. You get 90 days from the removal date. Only works for listings removed after July 15, 2025. If yours was taken down before that, you're out of luck.

Etsy sold Reverb. The music gear marketplace was divested in June 2025. Not directly a policy change but it signals Etsy is narrowing focus to the core marketplace.

Forum privacy. You now need to log in to read most Etsy Community forum posts. Only Announcements and Technical Issues are publicly visible. This makes it harder to casually browse seller discussions for intel.

Estimated delivery dates. Etsy uses historical shipping data and carrier information to calculate delivery estimates now. If your shipping history is slow, your listed estimates get longer automatically. And that affects search placement. Ship on time.

What does Etsy's new CEO mean for sellers?

Kruti Patel Goyal took over as Etsy CEO on January 1, 2026, replacing Josh Silverman. She previously ran Depop and spent over a decade in leadership roles at Etsy, including Chief Product Officer. The focus is reportedly on "returning to growth" through product innovation rather than acquisitions. No major seller-facing policy changes have come from the new leadership yet, but the fact that active sellers dropped 10.9% in Q3 2025 means seller retention is likely a priority.

Is Etsy on ChatGPT now?

Yes. Since September 29, 2025, US ChatGPT users can discover and buy Etsy products directly inside a ChatGPT conversation through Instant Checkout. Etsy was the first commerce partner for this feature. Your shop is automatically eligible if you're enrolled in Offsite Ads. No separate signup. Currently limited to US buyers and single-item purchases.

What changed in Etsy's Creativity Standards?

On June 10, 2025, Etsy removed the allowance for "templated designs or patterns" from their Creativity Standards. All items must now be based on a seller's original design. They also removed language allowing digital scans of vintage content, restricted resale of unmodified natural items, and banned several types of services. Template-based products are at risk even with commercial licenses. Full breakdown here.

OK so what actually matters

If you're overwhelmed by all of this, here's what I'd prioritize:

Check the Policy Violations page in Shop Manager. If anything is flagged, deal with it. Don't leave violations sitting there.

Try Marketplace Insights. Free keyword data from Etsy's actual search engine. Fifteen searches a week. Use it.

Make sure you're in Offsite Ads if you want the ChatGPT channel. I know the fee structure is frustrating but the exposure to hundreds of millions of ChatGPT users is real.

Audit your listings against the Creativity Standards. Templates, AI prompts you didn't write yourself, reselling unmodified nature items - all at risk now. If you want to check quickly, Listing Compliance Shield scans for exactly this kind of thing. And if you're worried about trademark violations in your listings, we check against 500+ protected brands too.

I'll keep updating this post as new changes come through. Etsy's been averaging a major policy update every couple of months and there's no sign that's slowing down.
